On Saturday 19 December, Shaymaa Qassim became the first Miss Iraq since 1972. She is 27 years old, with sparkling green eyes and a face lit with the satisfaction of success. Well aware that her new title will solve nothing of the geopolitical chaos that the country has suffered for several decades, the young woman has nonetheless named her mission: “To make Iraq’s voice heard, show that it is still alive, that its heart is still beating”.
