Some of these are wearable, some a bit more fashion-forward, and some we’re all heartily sick of (looking at you, man buns).
Either way though, they’re the beauty landscape of 2015. Let’s take a look back.
1. Grey hair
This is absolutely a case of Tumblr making it into real life, but I’m not mad about it. Ginnifer Goodwin did it with a pixie cut, Rihanna went ombre with a long pony tail, and our own Siena Yates gave it a go too.
While it’s probably one of the more out-there ideas to make the mainstream this year, it makes sense. Think of it as the logical conclusion of pastel hair. Not for everyone, but it does look great when it’s done right.
2. Strobing and the fall of contouring
In five or 10 years’ time when people start dressing up in mid-2010s costumes for Halloween, the makeup will be easy. High-key contouring and highlighting is already starting to look a bit dated, and that’s a sure sign it’s about to be as cringeworthy as ’80s blue eyeshadow.
It couldn’t last. Collectively, we all got a bit sick of shading our faces that intensely.
Enter strobing. While it’s kind of just a fancy word for using a lot of glowy highlighting products, there’s no denying that it arrived in a big way in 2015. Adding some reflect to the high points on your face is flattering on pretty much everyone, so this is one I’m thinking will stick around into the new year.
3. Brown everything
This one ties into the ’70s thing that’s been happening with fashion this year, but if you ask me, it’s got a bit more longevity than that.
I understand that ‘brown makeup everywhere’ isn’t super appealing, but hear me out. Shades of brown to bronze and to define the eyes are easy to work with, and hit that sweet spot between “Are you even wearing makeup?” and “Wow you look amazing”. A consistent colour palette across your face is just nice to look at – it lends a cohesion and harmony.
Add in the continuing Kylie Jenner matte brown lip trend, and you’ve got a whole look.
4. Clumpy lashes
This is definitely a bit more of a runway trend than a real-life one, and possibly for good reason. After trying to avoid spidery lashes for my whole makeup-wearing life, this was a definite change of pace.
Maybelline released a mascara called Colossal Chaotic specifically for creating the messy, morning-after look, and you’ve got to admit it does have a certain amount of drama. Not one to rule out.
5. Glossy lips came back
Further proof that fashion is cyclical. Lip gloss is the first beauty product I ever bought, but for the last five years or so it’s been all about a matte lip.
No longer. When a makeup artist friend pressed a tube of gloss into my hand in March, I was deeply skeptical, but since then I’ve come around. There’s something very luxurious about a high-shine red lip.
6. Fake nose rings
A strange one for those of us with real nose piercings, but I guess there’s room for a lower commitment option.
You can go high-end with a Meadowlark septum ring (if it’s good enough for Rihanna, it’s good enough for the rest of us) or order one from eBay for a dollar, but either way, it’s a lot less high pressure than healing an actual wound in your face.
If you’ve always thought a nose ring, there’s never been a better time to give it a temporary go.
7. Korean skincare
K-beauty reached its tipping point this year, but I’m still yet to try the Skin79 BB cream with snail secretion filtrate in it. Don’t be put off – they’re not all that weird, and Korean skincare has a well-deserved reputation for effectiveness.
When so many beauty products over-promise and under-deliver, there’s a reason Korean brands are standing out.
8. Man buns
More than anything, a top knot on a bloke is context-dependent. Did your hair just grow, and started getting in the way, so you bought a packet of hairties? No problem.
It’s the teeny-tiny ones with the shaved sides that have begun to grate. If you have to force it, you don’t have a bun. Let your poor follices rest.
9. Shattered glass nails
Here’s another one to thank South Korea for. Seoul salon owner Eunkyung Park posted the look on Instagram in June, and nail-art enthusiasts worldwide lost their minds.
It’s done with glue and cellophane, and Refinery 29 says that despite the name, it’s actually based on a paua shell. Love a little Kiwi connection.
10. Sunset hair
I feel like my hairdresser might look at me a bit sideways if I turned up to an appointment with a photo of a sunset or an oil slick as a reference, but that’s exactly what people on the internet started doing this year.
Fair play to them – some of the results are stunning. It’s multi-colour ombre, so you’re going to need pretty pale hair to begin with. For that reason alone it’s probably best left to the pros, but if you feel like going a bit out-there with your hair, this could be the look for you.The top 10 beauty trends of 2015
